Black tweed pencil skirt, £179, LK Bennett
Whether you have an hourglass figure, or a straight up/straight done column shape, or are more of an ‘inverted triangle’ then this is a look to consider. If you worry about a tummy, add some shapewear (it does work). Wear a bolder colour on top to draw the eye upwards. Keep the bottom half a plain block colour. I advise investing in a skirt that is lined, which will offer ease of movement.
I’ve worn it here with a collared jumper, I find Cefinn’s Josie knit to be one of the best on the market. Size down and it’s a neat fit, size up and it’s more casual but still suitable for work. If you feel hot just thinking about a merino knit, look instead to 100 per cent silk or Tencel Modal. Come summer, try a pencil skirt with a linen shirt, sleeves rolled up; very New York. But remember, you need to tuck a top in, the pencil skirt must be counterbalanced with a top half that’s streamlined. A one-piece body is also a great idea.
And finally, heels. Any additional height makes us all stand and walk better. Warning: this is not a skirt for running for the bus in. But roll it up in your bag and do a quick switch when you arrive. Your next natty purchase? A hand-held steamer. Game-changer.
