How safety-first Asia is finally reopening – China and Japan excluded

Two years into the pandemic and travel has finally normalised across much of the world. With the UK scrapping all of its Covid-related restrictions and mask rules being eased by certain airlines, holidays have a distinct 2019 feel this spring.

Perhaps most significantly, many countries across Asia are finally meaningfully reopening to tourists after an inordinate time in isolation. There’s been something of a domino effect – in recent weeks Vietnam and Bali have reopened, while Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia have eased testing rules. And from the start of April, other ultra-cautious countries such as the Philippines (which memorably once had a face shield and mask requirement) and South Korea will reopen to vaccinated tourists.

For fully vaccinated travellers, Sri Lanka, India and Cambodia are among the easiest options, requiring no tests. And, with just a pre-departure test requirement (regardless of vaccination status) newly opened Vietnam is surprisingly straightforward when compared to neighbouring Thailand.

Here, we run through the new entry rules for Asia’s big-hitters and look at the countries which remain off-limits for now.

Vietnam

Vietnam finally reopened to UK tourists last week and is surprisingly now one of the most straightforward options in Asia, requiring only proof of a negative pre-departure test, regardless of vaccination status.

Entry rules for vaccinated

Travellers must fill in an online passenger entry declaration form before departure and show proof of a negative PCR test (taken within the previous 72 hours) or lateral flow test (taken within the previous 24 hours). No proof of vaccination is required.

Can unvaccinated travellers visit?

Yes, all travellers are subject to the same rules.

Mask rules and other restrictions

Mask wearing is mandatory in public settings. Restrictions vary across the country but cities are mostly back to normal, with bustling restaurants and markets back in full swing.

Rules for children

Children under the age of two are not subject to testing requirements.

Thailand

Thailand will scrap its requirement for fully vaccinated travellers to take a pre-arrival test from April 1. Although holidaymakers will still have to take two tests during their trip, the move signals the country’s intention to start winding down its strict Covid measures, which have crushed its crucial tourist industry. Government officials have indicated that if there is no significant Covid surge in the next few weeks, then the country’s Test and Go system could be scrapped entirely from June 1.
