Ukraine-Russia evening briefing: Five key developments as civilian death toll ‘hits 2,000’

Good evening. After the first week of war in Ukraine, the civilian death toll has passed 2,000, according to Ukrainian officials.

It comes as the city of Mariupol, with a population of almost half a million, continues to suffer a sustained onslaught from Russian forces. One soldier told the Telegraph that the city was now totally surrounded.

1. ‘At least 2,000 civilians dead’ in first week of invasion

Ukraine’s emergency services have announced that the Russian invasion has killed 2,000 civilians to date. 

In a statement today, they added: “Children, women and defence forces are losing their lives every hour”.

The figures have not been independently verified.

2. Boris Johnson: Vladimir Putin guilty of war crimes

Boris Johnson used his speech during Prime Minister’s Questions this week to vociferously condemn Putin’s invasion, saying that the President has “gravely miscalculated in his abhorrent assault on a nation”.
