Filler is another option for sculpting a lax jawline, but it can so often go awry. “Aesthetically the most eye-pleasing jawline is one that is heart-shaped. However, if you focus solely on sculpting the jawline, without assessing the entirety of the face, then the results can appear unnatural, especially when it comes to fillers,” explains Dr Ali, who warns against the disturbing trend for over-filling jawlines in the quest for a sculpted look. She adds, “Fillers can be injected artistically to lift the face from the temples to the jawline, but if you inject the sides of the jawline it looks boxy and masculine.” She prefers to inject filler at the very outer edges of the jawline for the subtlest lift. Baby Botox injected into the chin and neck can sometimes be all that’s required to prevent the chin from curling upwards and restoring a heart-shaped jaw. “Toxins work well for women who grind their teeth or tense their neck,” Dr Ali points out. And lest not forget plain old weight gain. “I’ve seen numerous women and men who put on weight during the pandemic, who’ve become concerned about extra pockets of fat on their jawline,” says Dr Gout. The obvious solution is to drop excess pounds, but when doing so, Dr Gout recommends targeting the outer skin to help it snap back into shape. “Think of your skin as the shopping bag that’s carrying around the fat and muscle. By thickening the skin you are in turn reinforcing the structure that holds the underlying facial anatomy in place.”

For long-lasting skin firming, Dr Gout prescribes a potent solution of BHAs and AHAs to resurface and strengthen the skin, while Dr Marwa Ali prefers to combine the Lumenis Stellar M22 facial with ResurFX (£275 per session to improve skin quality, minimise pigmentation and soften wrinkles, along with HIFU and/or injectables, but always starting with the least invasive method.

Whatever the cause of your jowls, what I’ve learnt through my own battle with gravity is that quick fixes don’t work. Like lifting weights in the gym, retaining a sculpted jawline requires annual maintenance. “The end of winter, when we’re coming out of a season of indulgence, is the perfect time to book in for a combination of energy treatments with a resurfacing facial to refresh the skin and tighten and lift facial contours,” recommends Dr Gout. Is there something you can do at home? In all honesty, having a gua-sha stone or facial roller at your desk will help to relax tight muscles in the neck and jawline, while posture-improving exercises like Pilates and ballet will help to keep your posture in check. “The working from home phenomenon has created a generation of women with jowls they wouldn’t have otherwise. Investing in an ergonomic office chair and being mindful of how much you’re on your phone is one of the best ways to prevent tech neck,” says Jamie Sherill.
