Meanwhile Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, asked regulators to assess Rolls-Royce designs for a new generation of mini nuclear reactors.
Speaking a press conference alongside the Canadian and Dutch prime ministers, Mr Johnson said: “We need to intensify our self-reliance as a transition with more hydrocarbons, but what we also need to do is go for more nuclear and much more use of renewable energy.
“I’m going to be setting out an energy strategy and energy supply strategy for the country in the days ahead.”
UK officials are also working on proposals to introduce a “ceiling” on Russian fossil fuel imports that would decline over time to help wean Europe off the supply without tanking the economy. Meanwhile, the EU is drawing up plans to slash Russian gas imports by almost 80pc this year, a dramatic drop in the region’s high dependence on the supplies, according to Bloomberg.
Mr Johnson cautioned that a Russian energy embargo is “not something that every country around the world can do” after the US revealed talks on a ban.
The Prime Minister added: “There are different dependencies in different countries, and we have to mindful of that, and you can’t simply close down the use of oil and gas overnight even from Russia.”
Mr Scholz, the German Chancellor, said that his country’s energy supplies “cannot be secured in any other way” because of its heavy reliance on pipelines from the east.
However, other EU members including Poland are said to be supportive of the American embargo efforts.
On Monday night Michael Gove, the Communities Secretary, suggested the Treasury will offer more financial support to people struggling to pay their bills because of the effect of the Ukraine crisis on the cost of living.
Speaking to the Tonight with Andrew Marr programme on LBC, Mr Gove said: “All the evidence is that our Chancellor, whenever there has been a challenge, has risen to that challenge in order to support those most in need.”
In France, economy minister Bruno Le Maire said that consumers will have to “make an effort” to cut energy consumption so the country is less exposed to Moscow.
